A tuition-free, accredited online university needed more than search visibility. As learners increasingly begin their search inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot, WorldQuant University needed a strategic partner to correct how it was represented across AI answer engines, and make it the citable authority on itself, so that a mission built on global access is not lost at the new front door to education.
The challenge
WorldQuant University is genuinely free and accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), but AI engines either did not know it or told the wrong version. “WorldQuant” returned the hedge fund, and WQU was conflated with or subordinated to WorldQuant LLC. Its Wikidata entry placed the university in the wrong city, Wikipedia understated enrollment by more than half and omitted an entire offering, and third-party directories described the free university as a paid bootcamp. Underneath it all, wqu.edu carried no structured data, leaving engines nothing machine-readable to ground an answer on.
Unlike conventional universities with decades of established digital authority and broad academic catalogues, WorldQuant University is a relatively young institution with a highly differentiated model: accredited, entirely free, fully online, and serving global learners seeking education focused on quantitative, data, and AI skills and careers. That combination makes accurate representation especially important and also potentially vulnerable to confusion when AI engines rely on incomplete or inconsistent third-party information.
“WorldQuant University serves learners in more than 150 countries, so being discoverable and accurately represented wherever people are searching for education is critical to our mission. As AI becomes an increasingly important part of how prospective learners research programs and make decisions, we knew we needed to evolve beyond traditional SEO. We selected MarketingMob not only for their GEO expertise, but for their approach to building the capability with us — establishing the strategy, measurement, and processes while helping our team develop the knowledge to sustain and evolve the work over time,”
Tara Murphy, Vice President of Operations, WorldQuant University
What we did
Marketing Mob stepped in as a retained partner and delivered an integrated GEO + SEO program, starting with Phase 1: Entity Foundation. The work treated the problem as an entity problem, not a keyword problem, making WQU the single, unambiguous, well-sourced authority on itself in both prose humans read and structured data machines cite.
- Rebuilt the entity. A canonical Brand Entity Page written in an encyclopedic register that defines the institution and flatly separates it from WorldQuant LLC.
- Deployed structured data. A ten-block JSON-LD package (EducationalOrganization, a Course per program, FAQPage, and a Dataset for the Facts & Figures statistics) on a site that previously had none.
- Wrote trust content. Dedicated, sourced answers to the two questions that decide enrollment, “is it really free?” and “is it accredited?”
- Corrected the upstream sources. A citation-led Wikipedia and Wikidata correction plan (location, enrollment, program list) plus directory cleanup targeting the sources feeding the errors.
- Fixed metadata. Rewrote meta descriptions across priority pages to fix snippet gaps suppressing click-through on already high-ranking pages.
- Built a GEO measurement system. A 16-prompt baseline run monthly across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, scored on a fixed rubric, so “better” is measured rather than asserted.
- Scaled into content. Extended the program into an AI-native content ecosystem: comparison listicles and a learner guide built to be cited (Phase 2, in progress).
The results
Within a single quarter, WorldQuant University moved from largely invisible and frequently misrepresented in AI answers to consistently and accurately cited across every major engine.
Readiness. AI Search Readiness rose from 68% to 88%, with Authority & Trustworthiness more than doubling from 32% to 84%.
AI citations. Daily AI citations in Microsoft’s Copilot ecosystem grew from 276 to 738, up 167%, with more distinct pages cited.
Answer accuracy. The outdated “New Orleans” location disappeared from every engine, and answer accuracy climbed across the board: on the 16-prompt baseline, Claude went from 5 to 16 accurate answers and Perplexity from 2 to 12.
New learners from AI. “AI Assistant” became a tracked new-user acquisition channel in Google Analytics, and AI properties (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) drove growing referral traffic to wqu.edu.
Search followed. Traditional search grew in step: Google impressions rose 27% (300K to 381K) and clicks from 17.5K to 19.9K over 28 days.
